Going Deeper
Who's Your Chicken Daddy?
The idea of “going deeper” came to my mind when I read the scriptures in Psalm 107:23-31. The human that God continually uses to help me “go deeper” is my husband, Todd. In these enewsletters, you’ll hear me talk about my dog and my chickens and how God teaches me deeper truths and reveals special moments, but nothing compares to what He shows me through Todd (not that I always admit it).
But, today it’s chickens…and Todd! Sunny is the name of my Sussex chicken. What a joy she is. Her name fits her perfectly (thanks Deb). She is probably the smallest of all of my chickens and also the fastest! In the early weeks of Sunny’s chick life, Todd would dig in the compost to find worms, and she never forgot. Now, anytime he picks up his shovel, she is at the compost pile before we even get a chance to call her over. Then she sits on the shovel and scratches so much she gets in the way of him using the shovel to dig up the very thing that she is after!
As I am writing this, Sunny is almost 20 weeks old. She still is the fastest chicken and runs right over to the compost when she sees Todd with the shovel. No fear. But now, when he finds a worm, she doesn’t even want it. I think she just enjoys the process so much! Maybe its the anticipation, or the other surprises in the dirt, but I think she just loves hanging with “chicken daddy.” Either way, the things that started out to be a necessity became a joy in her life. Even though he dug and found worms, she keeps wanting to dig deeper. More dirt. More scratching. More exploring. Yeah sure, worms are ok but lets dig more!
God wants to be our chicken daddy. No fear. He wants us to come running when He shows Himself. He wants us to “do business in great waters,” as the Bible says in Psalm 107:23-31, where we have to totally and completely depend on Him. He wants us to seek him and go deeper. And then, He promises He will always more than show up! He shovels blessings on our lives. He wants us to enjoy the process of doing business in great waters. I really believe when we go deeper with the Lord, we no longer will desire those things we thought we needed. But He will always provide something bigger, greater and more purposeful then we even know…even bigger than worms!
There you have it. Simple, natural events in life can all lead to purpose and our Creator’s love. We just have to look for it and…yep, you probably guessed it…go deeper!
And while we are still talking chickens (sorta)…here is a homemade fermented mayo recipe that you can make with farm fresh eggs! Can you dig it?
